Duration: 60–75 minutes
Objective: Teach safe fire practices, proper fire management, and responsible behaviour around campfires
Opening (10 minutes)
- Opening ceremony or flag break
- Scout Promise or Law
- Introduction to the importance of campfire safety
- Review of expectations for behaviour around fire
Campfire Safety Overview (10–15 minutes)
Leader-led discussion covering:
- When and where campfires are permitted
- Fire bans and local regulations
- Choosing a safe fire site
- Fire safety circle and personal space
- Appropriate clothing and hair safety around fires
Fire Building and Management (15–20 minutes)
Demonstration and discussion of:
- Proper fire lay types (teepee, log cabin)
- Safe use of matches and lighters
- Keeping water, sand, and tools nearby
- Maintaining a manageable fire size
- Never leaving a fire unattended
Hands-On Safety Activities (15–20 minutes)
Patrol-based activities such as:
- Identifying safe and unsafe fire setups using photos or scenarios
- Practising fire tool handling and passing
- Role-playing what to do if clothing or gear catches fire
Extinguishing and Leave No Trace (10 minutes)
- Proper methods for extinguishing a fire
- Checking for heat and cold ashes
- Restoring the fire site
- Leave No Trace principles related to fires
Review and Reflection (5–10 minutes)
Group discussion:
- Why campfire safety is everyone’s responsibility
- One key safety rule each scout will remember
- How these skills apply beyond scouting
